Accepted, With Conditions: Tehran Says Washington Took the Seven-Day Plan and Asked for More, Vance Names the Price, and the IRGC Points at the Cables

Verified events · Official sources · Chronological ledger

Day 236 in one line: Iran said Washington had accepted its plan and then asked for more; Washington said the more was enrichment — the same nuclear-first condition that has divided the two sides since September.

"Accepted," With More Terms

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said indirect talks with Washington were continuing through Pakistan and Qatar, and claimed the United States had accepted Iran’s seven-day proposal but was seeking additional terms. Washington has not confirmed that account. Araghchi also said Tehran had "no trust whatsoever" in the US administration’s professed desire for peace, accused Trump of entering the war on erroneous assumptions about Iran’s fortitude, and said Iran’s geography gives it unparalleled leverage over traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. This tracker records the acceptance claim as Iran’s.

The Price: Enrichment

Vice President JD Vance told Reuters that Iran must significantly cut its enrichment capacity before the United States agrees to end the war. Secretary of State Rubio called a peace deal extremely difficult, said economic pressure would continue until Iran stops targeting shipping in the strait, and said any deal must block Iran’s path to a nuclear weapon. Read against Day 235, when an Iranian official said all enriched material would stay in Iran, the two positions on the nuclear file are now stated publicly and directly opposed.

The Cables

An IRGC commander threatened the internet cables running through the Strait of Hormuz if Iran’s infrastructure is attacked — the threat security chief Mohsen Rezaei first made on Day 226, now repeated by the Guard. The ISW-CTP assessment said Iran may have used more accurate systems against shipping in the strait over the past two weeks, consistent with its view that Iran is improving its maritime targeting.

Saudi Arabia, and Iraq Moves

Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said a strike on a Saudi airport killed one person and injured eight; the airport was not named in the reporting reviewed. Saudi air defences intercepted at least seven drones near Medina, in the Eastern Province and in the south, according to the Joint Forces Command; the Houthis denied attacking Medina or any other part of Saudi Arabia that day. In Iraq, government sources said Prime Minister Ali al-Zaydi ordered the closure of Houthi offices and the expulsion of Houthi members active with Iranian-backed militias, and Iraq closed the al-Sheeb border crossing with Iran without notice — steps ISW-CTP linked to US and Saudi pressure. Late on October 21 UTC, a source told ABC the US military was repositioning personnel at bases in the Middle East.

Held for Day 237

Several items were reported in the evening of October 21, US time, without timestamps confirming they fell before midnight UTC: the State Department’s order for non-emergency US government staff and families to leave Saudi Arabia, a New York Times report that US and Israeli plans for renewed strikes after the midterms have been drawn up, and Trump’s South Carolina rally. Consistent with how this tracker dated his October 19 Kansas rally, they will be logged in the Day 237 brief.

Status Assessment

Tracker status holds at WAR RESUMED. Day 236 brings the dispute to its core in public: Iran says its plan was accepted and the US now wants more; the US says the more is enrichment cuts; Iran has said its uranium stays home. Both sides still describe talks through Qatar and Pakistan, the IRGC threatens the cables beneath the strait, and the Houthi campaign continues to kill people at Saudi airports. No ceasefire is in force.
