Day 235 in one line: Tehran set preconditions for even beginning talks and said its uranium stays home, the American president said he could leave right now, and Israel’s prime minister spoke of eliminating the regime — while Britain joined the defence of Saudi skies.
Iran’s Red Lines
President Masoud Pezeshkian said the United States must end sanctions and threats before negotiations can begin, and Iran ruled out talks with Washington until its conditions are met. An Iranian official said all of the country’s enriched nuclear material would remain in Iran — "not a gram" would leave, in Fox’s rendering. Parliament Speaker Qalibaf said the US could not gain trust unless the Strait of Hormuz was reopened, and Iran blamed American warmongering for the crisis there. Araghchi said neither Saudi Arabia nor the Houthis had responded to Iran’s mediation offer. Set against the US demand that the nuclear file come first, the uranium position narrows the ground for any deal.
Washington: Winning, Could Leave, Won’t Strike Yet
At a rally in Kansas on Monday night Trump said the United States was winning the war and "can leave right now," while repeating that Iran cannot be allowed nuclear weapons and that strikes are not good enough without lasting guarantees. The White House reaffirmed that the US will not attack Iran before the midterm elections, and a Qatari official said mediation between the two had not been interrupted. Senator Bernie Sanders urged the President to end the war, citing higher fuel prices.
Hegseth in Israel; Netanyahu on the Regime
Defense Secretary Hegseth met Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in Israel, sources told ABC. Netanyahu said he had spoken with Trump about eliminating the Iranian regime, and US media reported he told Trump they had a job to finish; sources said the Pentagon had prepared plans to use the GBU-43 on Iranian military sites if ordered. Israel votes on October 27, a week before the US midterms.
Britain Joins the Saudi Air Defence
Britain’s Defence Ministry said it would provide additional defensive military support to Saudi Arabia, flying missions to intercept Houthi projectiles, supported by an A400M transport and military advisers; Defence Secretary Wes Streeting called the Houthi attacks despicable. The ISW-CTP assessment noted this could free Saudi aircraft for offensive operations. UKMTO reported a tanker interdicted off the coast of Oman. In Britain, police re-arrested two men suspected of spying for Iran in an airbase incident; the reporting reviewed did not name the base.
