Iran“Negotiations Are Meaningless”: Pezeshkian Shuts the Door, the Saudi Coalition Opens a Front at the Bab el-Mandeb, and Tankers Burn in Hormuz Again
Day 220 in one line: eight days after offering inspectors on American television, Iran’s president called talks with Washington meaningless — on the day the Saudi coalition launched its biggest counter-offensive of the war and took back the port the Houthis seized in September.
"Negotiations Are Meaningless"
President Pezeshkian told visiting Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan that negotiations with the United States were meaningless, IRNA reported: "So far, they have attacked us three times after talks, and this shows that they are not seeking dialogue; rather, their goal is to overthrow the Islamic Republic of Iran." He cited assassinations, sanctions, pressure, threats and broken commitments. It is a sharp reversal from Day 212, when the same president told CBS Iran would admit UN inspectors and abide by any deal. Foreign Minister Araghchi, speaking the same day, kept a door ajar: no military solution, no solution based on new sanctions, and only negotiations based on justice and fairness could end the conflict. On Day 219 the foreign ministry spokesman had said Iran would convey additional points on the US counter-proposal; this tracker has not seen them delivered.
Operation Yemen Dawn: Mocha Retaken
The Saudi-led coalition said about 100 fighter jets launched strikes on the Houthis on Monday morning in what spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki called Operation Yemen Dawn. Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces said they had retaken the port of Mocha and advanced around the Bab el-Mandeb, a day after launching a major offensive to recover territory the Houthis seized in September, and announced a strategic offensive toward Sanaa. The Houthi maritime coordination body issued a warning to airlines flying in Saudi airspace. The UN Secretary-General expressed concern at the sharp escalation. This is the largest coalition operation logged in this archive, and the first reversal of the Houthi gains of Days 195–196; Perim Island’s status was not reported.
Hormuz: Tankers Hit, One Turned Back
UKMTO reported a tanker struck by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday. It also reported that an inbound tanker was hailed by the Revolutionary Guard and told to turn back or be targeted, and that its master complied. Reports of the previous day differ: Iran International counts two tankers hit on Sunday, other agencies one. This tracker did not log the Sunday strikes in its Day 219 brief and records them here as a late entry. The US military said its blockade has now turned back 130 ships, up from about 115 a week earlier.
Washington: "Almost Over"
Trump said the war was almost over and called higher petrol prices a small price to pay for keeping Iran from a nuclear weapon. Israel’s envoy warned that Iran must come to terms with the United States or face military consequences, saying Tehran negotiates in bad faith.
Status Assessment
Tracker status holds at WAR RESUMED. Day 220 is the day both tracks hardened at once. Iran’s president has declared talks meaningless while his foreign minister insists only fair negotiations can end the war; the strait saw strikes and an Iranian turn-back order; and the Saudi coalition opened its largest offensive yet in Yemen and took back Mocha. With a third US carrier en route and the American blockade tightening, the diplomatic channel through Qatar is the only element of the war that did not move. No ceasefire is in force.
