Day 212 in one line: twenty-four hours after the rejection, the American president said the talks would go on, the Iranian president said on American television that inspectors could come in, and the Iranian foreign minister said Iran was ready for doomsday — all three at once.
"They Overplayed Their Hand"
Trump told Axios by phone that he expects more talks with Iran this week. "They want to make a deal, but it is not the deal that I want to make," he said, adding that Iran’s offer was what Washington might have agreed to a year ago and that Tehran had overplayed its hand. UN Ambassador Mike Waltz said the plan was rejected because Iran sought concessions up front. The rejection of Day 211 therefore stands as a rejection of the terms, not of talking: the sequence dispute — US relief first or Iranian steps first — is now the stated reason, from the President and his ambassador both.
Pezeshkian on Face the Nation: Limits, and Inspectors
In an interview recorded on September 25 and aired on Sunday — a rare network interview with the leader of a country at war with the United States — Pezeshkian told Margaret Brennan that Iran would abide by whatever it commits to, including on whether its military would follow a deal. Asked whether talks would put limits on the nuclear programme without Iran abandoning it, he said Iran agreed and had reached an understanding on this before. Asked twice whether Iran would now admit UN nuclear inspectors, he answered "That is absolutely correct." He cited an atmosphere of distrust on meeting Trump, pointing to a strike he said killed or injured around 168 schoolchildren. Iran is not seeking war, he said, but will defend itself, and has already agreed not to develop nuclear weapons. Araghchi: A Doomsday War, or Diplomacy
Foreign Minister Araghchi said Tehran is prepared for a doomsday war but remains open to diplomacy: "It is up to President Trump to choose." He said Iran had not yet received an official rejection through the mediators, and Iran insisted on its conditions on Sunday. An Iranian lawmaker, Mojtaba Zarei, warned on Saturday that Tehran had its fingers on the trigger, reading the President’s focus on the nuclear programme as preparation for another strike. Pezeshkian left New York and returned to Tehran, thanking Chinese President Xi Jinping for supporting the diplomatic framework.

Waltz said on Saturday that a record 146 countries had condemned Iran over its attacks on civilian shipping — the multilateral answer to Saudi Arabia’s appeal at the UN the same day. It is the broadest diplomatic isolation of Tehran logged in this archive, and it arrived in the same week Iran’s president was admitted to New York and Washington called the talks constructive.
