Pezeshkian addressed the General Assembly on Wednesday, a day after Trump told it his choice was a deal after the midterms or annihilation. It is a rare instance of a head of state speaking at the UN while at war with the host nation. He said Iran would never bow its head or bend the knee, that it had never started a war and had always shown commitment to the negotiating table, and that "they imposed the war on us, but we proved that we’re not afraid of fighting." He held up photographs of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and of Iranian schoolchildren he said were killed by US and Israeli strikes, and called Iranians the victims of terrorism rather than its authors. The US delegation walked out as he began. Trump was not in the hall.
Three Things Iran Will Not Yield
CNN’s analysis set out the substance beneath the defiance: no concession on the nuclear programme, on missile defences, or on control of the Strait of Hormuz. On the strait, Pezeshkian argued that others cannot enjoy free passage through a waterway while using it to impose aggression on Iran and deny it access to its own waters. On the nuclear file he said knowledge cannot be the preserve of a few countries and that the dispute has no military solution, adding: "The atomic bomb is in Israel, but the inspectors are in Iran." Read against the seven-day offer of Day 207, the position is coherent: Iran will reopen the strait on terms, but will not concede the right to close it.
Two Hours With Witkoff, and No Breakthrough
Reporting confirmed that Foreign Minister Araghchi held at least two hours of talks in New York with envoy Steve Witkoff on Day 207 — the first sign of diplomacy between the two governments since the interim agreement collapsed in July. Witkoff had described the exchange as conducted through mediators; accounts of the format differ, and this tracker records the duration and participants rather than characterise the room. Secretary of State Rubio said the sideline talks produced no major breakthrough, and dismissed Iran’s standing to lecture others on human rights. The European Council president met Pezeshkian on the sidelines.
Two Narratives
Trump maintains that Iran desperately wants a deal and that one is likely right after the November 3 midterms. Pezeshkian’s speech was built to contradict exactly that: not a government seeking terms but one refusing them under fire. Both cannot be the full picture — Iran did send written conditions through Qatar on Day 204 and offered a seven-day reopening on Day 207 — and the gap between the offer and the podium is the space any negotiation would have to occupy.

On Monday, September 21, UKMTO reported a tanker struck by an unknown projectile as it entered the Strait of Hormuz; two crew members sustained minor injuries and the vessel continued to port under its own power, with no environmental impact reported. A second report that day described two tankers damaged by a projectile and flying debris. It happened on the same day the oil market fell below $100 on hopes of diplomacy.
