Deadlock in Israel, Disdain in Mississippi: Netanyahu’s Bloc Falls Short as Trump Says the Ceasefire Was “Sort of a Waste of Time”
Day 242 in one line: Israel’s voters denied their war-time prime minister a clear mandate a week before America votes, as the US president said the one ceasefire of the war had been a mistake.
Israel Votes: No Clear Winner
Israel’s first parliamentary election since October 7, 2023 produced no clear majority. Exit polls showed neither Prime Minister Netanyahu’s bloc nor the opposition led by Gadi Eisenkot on a clear path to the 61 seats needed; two polls showed the blocs tied at 51 seats and a third put Netanyahu’s bloc three seats ahead. Likud won the most votes. As counting continued, Haaretz reported Netanyahu’s bloc on 55 seats against 65 for opposition parties with more than half the vote counted. Netanyahu claimed right-wing parties had won a "decisive majority" among the Zionist public and called for a national right-wing government; Naftali Bennett declared he had lost. Trump, who endorsed Netanyahu on October 18, later called the result a come-from-behind stalemate. Results are not final; this tracker will log the certified count.
"Sort of a Waste of Time"
At a rally in Corinth, Mississippi, on Monday evening US time, reported after midnight UTC, Trump said: "We did a little ceasefire, which I never liked very much. I considered sort of a waste of time, but, you know, you like to listen to professionals." He said Iran started the war, called the US blockade the greatest probably in naval history, said not one Iranian ship had got through in many months, claimed Iran had been two weeks from a nuclear missile when the campaign began, and predicted the war would end soon. Sources differ on which ceasefire he meant; this tracker records his words without assigning them to the April truce or the June memorandum.
Tehran: Washington "Not Serious"
Tehran said the United States was not serious about talks, a day after the Mecca Pact envoys met Pezeshkian. A ship caught fire off Iraq, Al Jazeera reported. The Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted further Houthi missiles and drones aimed at the kingdom.
Status Assessment
Tracker status holds at WAR RESUMED. Day 242 leaves both of the war’s democratic clocks unresolved: Israel has no clear government, and America votes in a week under a President who now calls the war’s only ceasefire a waste of time and whose forces are reported ready to strike within 96 hours of an order. The pledge of no strikes on Iran before November 3 stands. No ceasefire is in force.
