“A Decision to Make”: Trump Weighs a Deal Against Finishing Iran Off, Rules Out Striking That Day, and His Commander Tours the Strait
Day 240 in one line: the American president said the choice was now his to make — a deal or finishing Iran off — and that it would not be made that day, as his regional commander inspected the strait and Riyadh’s airport reopened.
"A Decision to Make"
Trump told Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures that he was deciding between reaching an agreement with Tehran and taking action to "finish them off," two days after saying the US may do another Epic Fury. He said he had a decision to make and that the United States does not play games. Asked whether he planned to attack Iran that day, he first said he would be foolish to telegraph it, then said no. His pledge of no strikes on Iran before the November 3 midterms stands.
Araghchi: Positions Unchanged
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said a resumption of war with Israel and the United States would not change Iran’s positions, and that messages were still being passed to Washington. Talks have appeared stalled for weeks on enrichment and the US blockade; Qatari mediators were reported to be trying to ease tensions.
Cooper at the Strait
Central Command commander Admiral Brad Cooper visited the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, as the US military maintains its blockade of Iranian ports and assists shipping through the waterway. The National reported that the US had deployed a third aircraft carrier group to the Gulf, consistent with the Theodore Roosevelt deployment logged on Day 218, and that US government staff in Saudi Arabia face strict travel restrictions near the Yemeni border and in several cities and provinces. ABC carried Trump’s claim that more oil now leaves the strait than a year ago.
Saudi Arabia: Warnings, an Interception, an Airport Reopened
Saudi Arabia’s General Directorate of Civil Defense issued safety warnings on Sunday morning for Riyadh, Khamis Mushait and Abha amid continuing Houthi cross-border attacks, and the coalition said air defences intercepted and destroyed a Houthi ballistic missile launched toward Riyadh. CBS reported that Saudi Arabia had reopened King Khalid International Airport to international flights, more than two weeks after the deadly strikes of October 8–11; the reopening date was not given in the reporting reviewed.
Held for Day 241
A CNN report that the US has plans for major strikes on Iran and sufficient forces deployed to carry them out, if Trump chooses, carries an October 26 date; it will be logged in the Day 241 brief.
Status Assessment
Tracker status holds at WAR RESUMED. Day 240 puts the decision explicitly in the President’s hands and keeps it there: deal or force, not today, not before November 3 by his own pledge. Iran says war would not move it, messages still pass through mediators, the US commander inspects the strait, and Saudi Arabia’s capital reopens its airport under civil-defence warnings. No ceasefire is in force. Israel votes on October 27; the US midterms are nine days away.
