Mines and Money: A Supertanker Burns in Hormuz, CENTCOM Counts $25 Billion in Lost Iranian Oil, and Egypt and France Line Up Behind Riyadh

Verified events · Official sources · Chronological ledger

Day 232 in one line: the strait claimed another tanker by Iran’s own account, the US put a price on what its blockade has cost Tehran, and Saudi Arabia gained two outside defenders as its war with the Houthis widened.

A Supertanker and a Mine

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said a supertanker carrying more than 2 million barrels of crude oil exploded and caught fire after hitting a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel’s name and flag were not given, and the claim had not been independently confirmed in the reporting reviewed; on Day 229 Iran attributed the GFS Pride sinking to a mine, while Central Command said it was an Iranian projectile. This tracker records the supertanker incident as an IRGC claim. Central Command said the vast majority of Iran’s attempted attacks on shipping were unsuccessful.

$25 Billion

Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper said the US blockade had prevented Iran from exporting about $25 billion of oil, and that Iran now has no seaborne imports or exports apart from US-approved humanitarian aid. Vice President Vance said the United States had won decisively against Iran in some ways but that key objectives remain.

Defenders for Riyadh

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said Egypt was ready to defend Saudi Arabia if requested, adding: "We are speaking only about defense." France said it had begun deploying military assets to the kingdom. The Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with Saudi and Yemeni intelligence, reported that Iran has stepped up military assistance to the Houthis, helping them mount increasingly sophisticated attacks — the substance of the Saudi accusation Tehran denied on Day 231.

Araghchi in Baghdad

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in Baghdad, said Tehran supports a political process to resolve the conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, repeating Iran’s offer to mediate. Iran’s reply to the US proposal has still not been reported delivered.

The Yemen Front

Saudi Arabia said it shot down four drones, including over Riyadh. The Saudi military said two pilots were killed when their helicopter crashed near the Yemen border; no cause was given. The Houthis said Saudi airstrikes killed three children in Yemen, and the coalition said on Friday it had destroyed two ballistic missile launchers in northwestern Yemen and would release footage of alleged Houthi arms smuggling by sea to Hodeidah.

Status Assessment

Tracker status holds at WAR RESUMED. Day 232 shows both sides’ pressure tools at work: Iran’s mines and missiles in the strait, America’s blockade with a $25 billion bill attached. The Saudi-Houthi war is drawing in outside states, with Egypt offering defence and France deploying, as reporting corroborates the Saudi charge of growing Iranian support. Tehran speaks of a political process for Yemen while its reply to Washington stays unsent. No ceasefire is in force.
