Twenty Attacks in Fourteen Days: A Ship Goes Down in Hormuz, Tehran and Washington Disagree on Why, and Iran Readies Its Answer

Verified events · Official sources · Chronological ledger

Day 229 in one line: the tanker war produced its first sinking of the month and its worst fortnight of the war, with Tehran and Washington giving opposite explanations for the same wreck.

A Ship Goes Down

A cargo ship sank in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday. Iran said it struck a naval mine while attempting to navigate the strait. A US official said Iran had lied about the sinking and had attacked the ship, likely with a missile. The vessel’s name, flag and crew status were not confirmed in the reporting this tracker reviewed. This tracker records the sinking as fact and the cause as disputed between the two governments.

Twenty Attacks Since October 1

UKMTO said it had recorded 20 reported attacks in the Strait of Hormuz since October 1, and shipping data reported by CBS put attacks at their highest level since the war began. The maritime monitor warned that ships in the strait still face indiscriminate attacks. The figure is more than double the nine attacks UKMTO counted in the first week of the month, and it comes a week after Iran and Oman agreed coordinates for designated safe transit routes that have not yet produced safe transit.

Riyadh Again, and the Fuel Strikes

Saudi Arabia said it intercepted another Houthi ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh after residents reported explosions; the Saudi Press Agency said those injured included two women, a man and a child. The Houthis said their attacks on Saudi airports and oil infrastructure would continue. The coalition said its October 13 operation targeted Houthi fuel facilities in Sanaa, Hodeidah and Dhamar that it said feed missile and drone launches. The UN said the Saudi-Houthi war was cutting off food assistance to 800,000 people, and Saudi Arabia was offering alternative travel routes to delegates for its investment conference.

Tehran: Finalising, and Preparing

Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Iran was finalising its reply to the US proposal, to be delivered through mediators, and that reopening Hormuz depends on American compliance; he warned that the consequences of renewed US military action would not be confined to the region. Parliament Speaker Qalibaf said Tehran must be prepared for war even amid peace talks. On October 13 Trump suggested Iran may be behind the Houthi attacks to drive up oil prices before the US elections.

Held for Day 230

AP reported late on October 14, US Eastern time, that the Houthis had struck Saudi Aramco’s headquarters, according to officials. The report arrived after midnight UTC, and this tracker will log it under the date its confirmed timing supports.

Status Assessment

Tracker status holds at WAR RESUMED. Day 229 is the tanker war at its worst so far: twenty attacks in a fortnight and a ship on the bottom, with the two governments blaming a mine and a missile. Iran says its answer to Washington is nearly ready while its speaker tells it to prepare for war; the Houthis promise more strikes on Saudi airports and oil, and the UN counts 800,000 people losing food aid. No ceasefire is in force.
